Each piece is hand cut, and laced based on Wild West style latigo saddle strings.
Saddle strings were attached this way in case the saddle maker, repair man, or cowboy was short on fasteners etc. The lacing method probably dates back further... but we're saddle folk - so that's our frame of reference.
